10 workers were injured in an accident [5 seriously], when a 2 ton truck collided with the concrete barriers on the R21 south near the R25 off- ramp this afternoon. The truck with 13 workers was traveling along the R21 when the driver lost control and smashed into the barriers.
The force of the impact flung all the workers up against the side of the canopy causing it to break free from the truck. The workers and canopy were thrown across the barriers and slid several meters down the opposite side of the highway. The truck came to rest 150 meters down the road wedged up against the concrete blocks.
Netcare 911 paramedics arrived on scene and found the workers laying up against the barriers in the centre of the highway. Fortunately bystanders had cordoned of the roadway to protect all the injured. Paramedics were faced with 5 people that were seriously injured and a further 5 that escaped with only minor injuries. Emergency personnel were flabbergasted to find that 3 people miraculously escaped the ordeal without any injuries at all.
All the patients were stabilized on scene and then transported to the Arwyp Hospital in Kempton Park for further medical care.
