Eyewitnesses in Chesterville Township in Durban said that it seems that a white minibus taxi was about to be hijacked when the driver took off down the road, allegedly to get away from an unknown number of men that were shooting at him from outside the taxi.
The male driver, of unknown age, was allegedly shot a number of times, and was rapidly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment by a private vehicle, before the emergency services were called. The course of events following this alleged attempted hijacking, left an elderly woman deceased, another seriously injured and a residential house in shambles after the taxi drove into it.
The taxi sped down the road after the shooting started, knocking down the first woman who was waiting on the side of the road. She was deceased upon arrival of the ER24 paramedics, and nothing further could be done for her. A few meters away, the taxi collided with another pedestrian, also an elderly female. She was left with serious injuries, and paramedics had to perform life saving techniques on her before transporting her to hospital by ambulance.
The taxi then carried on down the road, hitting the pavement which caused it to further lose control. It then crashed into a lamp post in the middle of the road, leaving it lying still in the road with it’s live wires exposed. After that, it crashed through a residential property’s fence, coming to rest after further crashing through the wall of the lounge of the home. Fortunately no one was injured inside the house at the time of the collision.
It is as yet unclear as to what actually took place this evening, and it will be the difficult task of the police in the area to piece together and investigate this unfortunate series of events.
