North West Department of Public Safety has encouraged taxi drivers to drive within the speed limit and to obey the rules of the road over this coming festive season. This was raised at the 2010 Regional Number One Taxi Driver of the Year Awards Ceremony, held in Taung in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District.
Spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele says the department will intensify safety on all public roads. “Driver fatigue increases during the festive season when most of the taxi drivers succumb to the greed of attempting to maximize gains by ferrying more passengers to their various destinations,” says Mr. Kgwele.
MEC Howard Yawa, recently sent out a strong warning to motorists who warn other drivers of law enforcement operations ahead through flashing their headlights, that they will be arrested in the province.
Motorists, who commit the offence during zero tolerance festive season law enforcement operations, will be summarily arrested for defeating the ends of justice. MEC Yawa also warned that law enforcement officers will be out in full force on all roads in the province “to sustain the momentum of the onslaught against crime and lawlessness”.
