Last night (Sunday, 24 August 2014) at about 23:59, police received a complaint of a Business Robbery in Dreyer Street in Claremont. According to information, an employee was busy counting cash when he was approached by a group of unknown persons. The employee were held up at gunpoint and robbed of a large sum of cash. The suspects fled the scene in a White Nissan Tida with GP registration plates as well as a white VW Polo. Whilst police were en-route to the scene, they spotted the two vehicles fitting the description of the vehicles being driven by the alleged suspects.
A high speed chase then ensued which resulted in the driver of the Nisan Tida losing control along Racecourse Road. The three occupants from the vehicles then alighted and fled into different directions. Members from SAPS Claremont were then called for backup and were assisted by members of the Nyanga Cluster TRT as well as SAPS Wynberg, Phillip and Lansdowne.
With the assistance of the additional manpower, the three suspects were arrested. Further investigation led police to Gugulethu were they arrested a further five (5) suspects and confiscated the white VW Polo and recovered a portion of the cash that was stolen. Subsequent investigations have also ascertained that the Nissan Tida was a rented vehicle.
Early this morning, Monday 25 August 2014, police also recovered the firearm used in the incident in the vicinity of Lansdowne. The eight (8) arrested suspects who are residents of Cape Town and aged between 20 and 35 are due to appear in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 27 August 2014 on charges of Business Robbery.
