Four suspects aged 22 and 40 were arrested by Empangeni police for kidnapping a 39-year-old business man. It is alleged that on Saturday, 20 September 2014 the victim closed his shop and proceeded to his place of residence. Whilst waiting at the gate he was approached by the suspects who were travelling in a double cab motor vehicle. At gunpoint they forced him into their vehicle. They also attempted to take his vehicle but were not successful and drove away with him. The suspects demanded cash for the release of the victim.
The victim’s family then contact police and Empangeni Detectives began with their investigation which led to the arrest of the suspects at Empangeni. They were charged for kidnapping and attempted carjacking. They were also found in possession of 508 cell phones suspected to be stolen. All four suspects will appear at the Empangeni Magistrates’ Court this morning.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended police at Empangeni for the swift arrests. “We urge members of the community not to negotiate with criminals. Always contact the police immediately when a crime is committed and allow the police to conduct their investigation,” she said.
