Yesterday at 12.00 Mayville police responded to a house robbery in progress at Harbottle road. As police officers approached the premises they were confronted by two suspects who were coming out of the house. It is alleged that the suspects opened fire at police before fleeing the scene on foot leaving their Mercedes Benz behind. The police officers gave chase on foot and managed to arrest one of the suspects. It is further alleged that while the police officers were chasing the suspects on foot, two other suspects who were still in the house used the police vehicle to flee from the scene.
SAPS members who responded afterwards found the police vehicle abandoned at Morningside where its alleged that the men hijacked an Opel Corsa. The arrested suspect will be charged for robbery, attempted murder and theft of motor vehicle. Police are still pursuing the three suspects who are still at large. The vehicle used by the suspects to commit house robbery at Harbottle was hijacked at Morningside.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the Mayville police for their quick response to the robbery that led to the arrest of one suspect and the recovery of a hijacked vehicle. “The arrested suspect will be profiled to see if he is not linked to other house robberies in the greater Durban area. We are confident that the outstanding suspects will be arrested soon,” she said.
