Five traffic officers were each sentenced in the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to three years in jail for corruption, SABC news reported.

The five were caught taking bribes from speeding motorists at Kei Cuttings in the Eastern Cape in 2003.

State advocate Mthunzi Mhaga called for a stiffer sentence, but later asked magistrate Deon Rossouw to consider that the five were now out of jobs and had suffered enough.

The officers would serve part of their sentences doing correctional supervision in their communities.

They applied for leave to appeal their sentences. The five would remain out on bail until the outcome of their appeal. – Sapa
