Port Elizabeth – A bread delivery man carted a bull on his bakkie for 15 kilometres through the roads of the Eastern Cape after colliding with the animal and sending it somersaulting through the air onto the roof-rack.

The collision took place on Tuesday in a rural area outside the town of Peddie, about 50 kilometres west of East London, The Herald newspaper reported.

Police told the newspaper they suspected the driver of animal cruelty when he pulled up at the police station in Peddie with his bovine burden.

But seeing no rope tethering the animal to the roof-rack, they accepted his explanation that the bull’s hooves became stuck in the rack during its crash landing.

The bull waited about five hours to be rescued by a crane but then had to be put down because both its legs were broken, police said.
