I have come across an interesting article in the Cape Times which features new road infrastructure to impact on road safety in the Southern Cape. I would like to quote:

” Road users in and around Knysna could find themselves surveying a brand new landscape with the construction of an entirely new road, the extension of the existing N2, two toll plazas and new bridges – all mooted as part of the proposed Knysna N2 Toll Road.

Two routes are being considered for the proposed toll road, and it seems very likely that construction of some sort will go ahead, because specialists believe that doing nothing will have negative impacts on Knysna and surrounding roads in the long run.

The toll highway would bypass Knysna’s CBD and is seen by specialists who compiled the project’s Environmental Impact Assessment as the best option for easing congestion in that area.

Specialists considered three options in making their recommendations related to the proposed toll highway, which would be built by the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral). The Environmental Impact Assessment was prepared by Grahamstown company Coastal and Environmental Services (CES).

The “proposed route” follows the route proclaimed in 1978 starting near the turn-off to Buffels Bay, requiring bridges at the Knysna and Salt rivers, and ending at Bracken Hill on the east side of town.

Members of the public have until June 26 to comment on the draft EIA, which can be accessed online at cesnet – click on the “public documents” link.”
