A Mpumalanga traffic officer was injured when he drove into two cows that were crossing a road on Wednesday.

Nelspruit police spokesperson Inspector Dawie Pretorius said on Thursday that the officer was patrolling the road between Karino and KaNyamazane outside the city when the cows crossed in front of him.

“The vehicle hit the cows and the driver lost control. The vehicle veered to the other side of the road and hit some rocks before coming to a standstill,” said Pretorius.

The traffic officer escaped unhurt but the traffic vehicle was seriously damaged and one of the cows sustained a broken leg.

Pretorius said cattle herders normally put up signs and wave red flags to warn motorists that cattle are crossing the road.

The traffic vehicle, a Ford Focus, was one of the 67 new vehicles that the department took delivery of in March.

Provincial department of transport spokesperson David Nkambule could not be reached for comment.
