Johannesburg metro police said earlier today that 16 motorists were arrested after being caught speeding on the N1 north freeway near the Olifantsfontein off-ramp in Midrand. Senior Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said a 35-year-old driver was caught driving at 239km/h in a GTI Golf just after midnight on Saturday.

Another driver, aged 27, was arrested for clocking 202km/h in a Renault at around 03:30 on Sunday.

“Officers also discovered that he [the 27-year-old driver] had removed both his rear and front registration plates and hid them in the boot.

“When he was questioned about the plates he said he removed them because he did not want to be caught by speed cameras,” Minnaar said.

All the arrested drivers will appear in the Midrand Magistrate’s Court on Monday charged with reckless and negligent driving.
