It was reported yesterday that two Johannesburg Metro Police officers were arrested for allegedly requesting a R60 bribe from a motorist.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the two officers stopped a motorist for talking on his cellphone while he was driving in Nugget Street, Hillbrow, on Monday. They asked the motorist for his driver’s license and a bribe.

The motorist did not have any money with him but agreed to go and get some while the officers waited for him. Before returning, he recorded the numbers of the bank notes. He gave the officers the money [R60] and called the anti-corruption hotline to report the pair.

Internal affairs found that the numbers on the bank notes matched the numbers given by the motorist. The officers were arrested and were in custody at the Hillbrow police station.

“Unethical behaviour will never be tolerated in the JMPD and where this behaviour is uncovered, it will be dealt with harshly,” Minnaar said.

Effective trafic enforcement and the absence of corruption are some of the most important requirements for road safety!

We would like to urge the public to report corrupt traffic officers.
