Leading GPS Navigation company TomTom has for the past year provided assistance in the development of the Arrive Alive road safety website. There has been significant growth in the GPS market as more and more road users gain awareness of the benefits of quality GPS navigation devices.

The helping hand from TomTom has enabled us to develop new pages with road safety information and also share road safety advice with our road users.

I was pleasantly surprised earlier this year to receive an African Drum with the logo of the 2 small hands from TomTom. This also explained to me why there are 2 hands in the TomTom logo –and I would like to quote :

“Navigation is as old as the stars. For centuries, people all over the world helped each other find their way via drums, beacons or signposts. Anthropologists claim that drums mark the start of communication technology. Signals and messages were communicated over great distances with drum beats in order to ensure travellers would find their destination as quick and precise as possible. Just like we do now at TomTom.”

Harld Goddijn, Chief Executive Officer of TomTom remembers the search for an appropriate name for its portable navigation devices.

“Before we used the name TomTom, the company was called Palmtop. This name symbolized what we were doing at the time: The development of applications for handheld computers and especially Palm Pilot. When the opportunities in the market increased, we realized that we needed a new name that reflected our new focus on the navigation industry. GPS navigation ensures that anyone can reach his/her destination fast, easy and stress-free, regardless of the device that he/she uses. TomTom was the perfect choice.

The TomTom logo with the two playing hands resembles the perfect symbol of what we are trying to achieve –the delivery of an easy means to help people finding their way. And it’s a fun image as well”

The Arrive Alive website would like to extend a word of appreciation to Joost Jetten from TomTom for the helping hand(s) in our efforts to create the best possible information portal on road safety.

We look forward to further enhancing online awareness on Road Safety!!
