Netcare 911 and all the emergency services rushed to the scene of a structural collapse in Newlands East at the Newlands Shopping mall. On arrival we found absolute chaos. The roof of the mall collapsed injuring a total of 11 people – 7 of them sustained serious injuries and 4 had minor injuries. All these patients were treated on scene and then transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
SAPS Search and Rescue and the fire department searched the building for any other possible people but after about an hour they declared that the area was clear. Fire and SAPS are investigating the incident.
