Berlin – Ten people were left fighting for their lives and dozens more were injured in a 260-car pile-up on a German motorway after a thunderous downpour, police said on Monday.

The accident, which happened late on Sunday on a 30km stretch of the A2 motorway near Braunschweig in northern Germany, was the worst in the road’s history, police added.

More than 300 ambulances, fire engines and police cars rushed to the scene to tend to the 66 people injured in the crash. The crash was blamed on cars aquaplaning on puddles and a low sun hindering drivers.
