Kenya’s top traffic police officer says two minivans have collided in southwestern Kenya, killing 21 people.
Traffic Commandant James Adoli said the minivans were on the road to Kisii, a major town in southwestern Kenya, when they crashed late on Tuesday. Kisii is some 165 miles (270 kilometres) west of the capital, Nairobi.
Adoli said the vehicles collided at a sharp corner on the road.
The roads in the area have sharp corners and steep inclines. Taxi minivans, popularly known as matatus, are Kenya’s main means of public transport. The vehicles’ drivers have a reputation for exceeding the speed limit in an effort to make more trips and more money.
