Atletico defender Pernia involved in car accident

Atletico Madrid left-back Mariano Pernia was involved in a road accident in Argentina on Tuesday night, but is not seriously injured.

Pernia, 32, was driving a hired car with two children, aged three and five, close to Tandil in the southern part of the province of Buenos Aires, when the car turned over and skidded off the road, for reasons that are still unknown.

Pernia was taken to the Hospital Santamarina in Tandil, with minor injuries to the head and shoulders. The children were unhurt.

Pernia, 32, is on holiday in Tandil, his home town.

His first club in Spain was Getafe, where he caught the eye with his powerful left-foot shots. In 2005 he was bought by Atletico, and played in the 2006 World Cup finals for Spain, having acquired Spanish citizenship. – Sapa-dpa
