Can I tow my off-road bike without a trailer?

snipimage31

A interesting question was sent to the Arrive Alive website:

Question:

I would like to know if I can tow my off-road bike with a towing device instead of using a trailer?

We referred this to the Road Safety Experts for a response and would like to provide a answer.

Answer:

I have assumed that he is referring to a quad bike??

There is a difference between towing and drawing. A trailer hitched to a motor vehicle by means of a coupling designed for that purpose is being drawn – any vehicle being pulled along by a rope or tow-bar is being towed (the inference in the latter is in an emergency / vehicle breakdown).

A quad bike (if this is what we are talking about) is not designed to be driven on the road thus the practice of loading them on bakkies and trailers for transport.

A motor-cycle (if this is the case) will need a special device to ensure that it does not turn freely (ie can go its own way) and the break, night and indicator lights will need to work with the drawing vehicle as the bike has now become a trailer (of sorts).
