A visitor to the Arrive Alive website raised the following enquiry:

“I want to know, once passing a speed sign do you have to be exactly on that speed limit or do u still have a few meters to reach the correct speed????”

Our Experts provided the following answer:

“Answer: A speed limit sign applies to the road immediately beyond the sign.

On non-urban roads one often finds a speed limit sign dropping the speed down from 100 km/h to 80 km/h. Then a short distance ahead there’s another sign reducing the limit to 70 … and again another one down to 60. This is to give the motorist time to see the next sign ahead and adjust his speed accordingly, in advance.

Speed limit signs are normally visible from a reasonable distance before the sign. On high-speed roads the signs are often larger than the standard size, for this reason.”
