Nurse dies in accident at level crossing in Bloemfontein

A nurse has died in the early hours of yesterday morning at a level crossing in Bloemfontein. It is reported that Eunice Mokhethi (50) was on her way to work when her vehicle was struck by a train at 06h30 at the McKenzie Street crossing.

The victim suffered serious head injuries and was announced dead at the scene of the accident. Witnesses told the media that that the white Toyota Corolla was dragged approximately 500 metres by the train.

The two children of the deceased are both students at the Free State University. It is not evident at this stage how the vehicle ended up on the level crossing. An investigation is in process.

A police spokesperson warned the public to be cautious near rail/ level crossings as a train might require more than 800 metres to come to a stop.
