The Arrive Alive website received this interesting request for info pertaining to the driver license test:
“I hope you may be able to assist me? I am looking for the road ordinance regarding the specifications of the vehicle being used while doing your driver’s licence test. My wife got her learners licence, and I bought her a Smart Passion.
This is the vehicle she will be driving at all times and she plans on doing her driver’s test with it. I cannot find the info regarding specifications of the vehicle to be used. The closest I get is that it must be able to drive at least 100km/h, must have side mirrors and review mirror, must not way more that 3500kg, must be self propelled, must have pedals and handbrake. What about length and weight? Please can someone help?”
We referred this to the Experts for a response:
“These are the requirements for the type of light motor vehicle to be used for the driving licence test, per the Road Traffic Act. The vehicle must, of course be roadworthy and comply with normal SA requirements for a motor vehicle (lights, reflectors, and all the other requirements for vehicles that are either imported or manufactured in motor plants in SA).

Type of vehicle
The test is designed for the testing of drivers of light motor vehicles. (Tare/Gross Vehicle Mass shall not be more than 3 500 kg)
The following vehicles are excluded:
• A combination of vehicles.
• A motor vehicle less than 3 metres in length.
The vehicle must conform to the standard requirements of roadworthy vehicles. Standard, unmodified production vehicles would normally conform.
