A very important aspect has been raised in a question pertaining to the demerit system. The Arrive Alive website received the following question:
“I agree the points system is wonderful and hope that it does make a difference on our roads. I am unclear on one point though, perhaps you could shed some light? With camera fines, will the driver have the points deducted from their licence, if so how will the traffic department know who the driver is from a camera, if not, what if the car is registered to someone other than the driver…eg.. Car is in husbands name but wife drives the car?
This was referred to friends at the RTMC and a response recived:
“The notice will be send to the registered owner of the vehicle.
If the owner was not the driver of the vehicle at the time the infringement was committed he/she will have the opportunity to nominate the driver. The points will only be allocated to the infringer once the fine has been paid and recorded.
