Beware of Average Speed Cameras in KZN!!

snipimage10

The Arrive Alive website received this interesting email from an alleged speedster:

“Guys, beware, they have changed the permanent cameras on the N3 into Average Speed Cameras. Basically they take a snap shot of your car recording the date and time and then a few KM’s further down they snap shot you again recording your time. Then they calculate how fast you were going to get from point A to B. If you were over the stipulated speed limit in the area, they smack you with a fat one. This one cost R1000.00 for averaging 126 in a 100 zone.”

I was asked whether this could in fact be true, and gained the following confirmation from the Road Safety Experts at the Road Traffic Inspectorate in KZN:

The Facts abouts ASD

“Yes indeed its average speed over distance where the distance is fixed and the time taken refers to road speed. What must be said is that the admission of guilt is set by the Magistrate and that the stretch of road is very challenging in terms of mist, rain and adverse weather and that it has a bad history of accidents. We intend to roll out ASD in other danger areas of the province in due course. J. M .Schnell”

This is a summary of how Average Speed Cameras are operated:
