A Cape Town driver was arrested for travelling more than twice the speed limit on a freeway, the city’s traffic services said on Tuesday.

Spokeswoman Merle Lourens said the driver of an Opel Coupe was clocked doing 221km/h in a 100km/h zone along the M5 on Friday evening.

He was pulled over by members of the city’s new traffic “ghost squad”.

“The driver, a 22-year-old male, said that he didn’t realise that he was going that fast until he saw the traffic officer behind him,” she said.

“He was apparently on his way to pick up children somewhere in town and was very tired as he had gone to work early that day.”

The man would appear in court on Tuesday.
