Tragic Saturday accident in Durban

One man was killed and another seriously injured when the car they were travelling in slammed into two concrete lamp posts on Sarnia Road, Durban late on Saturday night.

At approximately 23h15, Netcare 911 Paramedics were dispatched to intersection of Arundel and Sarnia Roads, where they found a VW Jetta wedged against a reinforced concrete lamppost. It appears the driver had lost control of his vehicle and veered off the road, colliding with the lamppost. It was apparent that the vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed, as it had completely dislodged one post from its foundation and had come to rest against the next streetlight.

The driver of the car sustained massive head and spinal trauma and died at the scene as a result of his injuries. His passenger managed to clamber from the car and was found at the roadside by paramedics. He sustained lower limb fractures and facial trauma. He was treated and stabilised at the scene before being transported by ambulance to an area hospital. He is in a serious but stable condition.
