One person is critical and 4 others serious after an accident on the N3 near the Peter Brown road off- ramp in Pietermaritzburg at 06h30 this morning. It is believed that the one vehicle collided into the back of another at high speed .
Paramedics from Netcare 911 raced to the scene and on arrival found one male trapped in the rear of the front vehicle and in a critical condition, a further 3 people from the front vehicle had serious injuries and the female driver from the back vehicle sustained minor injuries.
Paramedics had to sedate and ventilate the critically injured patient and after fireman used the jaws of life to free him from the wreckage he was transported to the Greys hospital for further treatment. Three other patients were transported to the Northdale hospital in Pietermaritzburg for further treatment. There was also a 4 year old child in the front vehicle, but miraculously was not injured .
SAPS Accident unit is investigating the accident.
