Truck driver loses control on N3

An articulated truck driver was seriously injured when his vehicle slammed into the concrete centre median on the N3 carriageway near Key Ridge late last night.

What exactly caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle and thereafter plough into the concrete wall is unknown. The heavy goods vehicle smashed through the reinforced wall and came to rest in oncoming Pietermaritzburg bound traffic.

The seriously injured man was cut from the wreckage by Netcare 911 Paramedics and fire-fighters using the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic rescue equipment. Once freed from the tangled metal, he was treated and stabilised by medics before he was transported to hospital by ambulance for further medical care.

Early morning delays on the freeway were expected while the scene was cleared.
