Woman seriously injured at pedestrian crossing

One woman was seriously injured when she was struck by a car in the intersection of Retief and Berg Streets, Pietermaritzburg, this afternoon. It is thought that the woman had been utilising a pedestrian crossing when she was hit by a car. All other circumstances surrounding the incident remain vague.

When Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene they found the injured woman at the roadside, after she had been carried to the road shoulder by passers’ by.

The woman was in a serious but stable condition, having sustained head and spinal injuries, lower limb fractures and multiple lacerations and abrasions. She was stabilised at the scene before she was transported by Netcare 911 ambulance to an area hospital.

In another incident a Metro Police Officer was struck by a car near the intersection of Gardiner and West Streets, central Durban today. It is believed that the man had his back to traffic when he was hit by an unknown vehicle. The driver of the car fled the scene.

The officer sustained minor abrasions and contusions. The man was transported to Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital, Durban, for further medical care.
