Driver survives late night accident on M1

accident-highway-1

A man miraculously survived after he smashed into the back of a heavy goods vehicle on the M near the New Road off ramp at around 23h00 tonight. Exact details are still speculative, but the driver of the truck recalls feeling a jolt and when he looked in his review mirror he saw a vehicle partially under the rear of his truck.

Noticing flames coming from the car, the driver continued for about 200 meters trying desperately to get his truck free from the mangled wreck. Fortunately soon after the truck and car came to rest in the left hand lane, they were able to extinguish the flames that by now were coming through the floorboard.

Paramedics from Netcare 911 and fireman arrived on scene within minutes of receiving the call and found a male in his 30’s still trapped in the mangled wreckage of his vehicle.

Emergency personnel used the Jaws of Life to free the seriously injured patient from the twisted frame of the car.

The patient was meticulously immobilized by paramedics before he was removed, and after he was stabilized they transported him to the Netcare Sunning hill hospital for further treatment.
