How will the demerit system affect the overloading of trucks?

The Arrive Alive website received this interesting question pertaining to the demerit system:

Question:

“Can you please let me know how the point system will work regarding truck overloading?”

This was referred to the Experts at the RTMC and the following answer provided:

Answer:

“If the vehicle that has been charged for overloading belongs to an operator the notice will be issued  in accordance with the provisions of section 49 of the National Road Traffic Act, 1996, this means that the driver will be issued with an infringement notice and when this notice is captured onto the National Contravention Register will the same notice be generated for the operator.

If the ordinary man on the street is charged for overloading a vehicle only the driver of the vehicle will then be issued with an infringement notice.

I hope this explanation is in order.”
