A man was killed and another seriously injured when they were hit by trains in two accidents in the Western Cape, paramedics said.

The first accident happened at the Muldersvlei train station in Stellenbosch just before 4pm, said ER24 spokesman Tristan Wadeley.

“A man believed to be in his late 30s was found lying on the tracks, under a train at the station.

“He had sustained serious injuries and was declared dead on arrival of emergency services,” said Wadeley.

He said eyewitnesses said the man jumped in front of the train as it was approaching. Police were investigating.

Less than two hours later, a 21-year-old man was seriously injured when he fell while attempting to get on a moving train at Bellville station.

“He was found lying under the train, between the tracks and the platform. Paramedics worked with the fire department in a confined space under the train to stabilise the man,” said Wadeley.

He sustained serious injuries and was taken to Tygerberg Hospital in a stable condition.
