At least eight people have been killed and 12 others injured in two separate accidents in the Western Cape. In the collision at Saldanha on the West Coast, all the occupants of two motor vehicles died. In the other incident in Symphony Way in Belhar on the Cape Flats, three people were killed and 12 injured, three of them seriously, in a head-on collision.

Meanwhile, in Johannesburg four people were killed and eight others injured in motor vehicle accidents in the past 24-hours. Two people died when their vehicle overturned on the Nasrec Road near Crown Mines.

In Northriding, two vehicles collided resulting in one of the drivers being trapped underneath his car. This morning, a driver died when his vehicle overturned at the corner of Louis Botha and Houghton Drive.

Johannesburg Emergency services spokesperson Percy Morokane said: “In our quest to make the city of Johannesburg an injury and accident free metropolitan, we have a joint initiative with the Johannesburg Metro Police Department where we embarked on a Festive Safety Drive. This is part of our Festive Safety plan.”

“With regard to pedestrian safety and motorist safety because of the high number of accidents that we had in the past year, we are saying that we will have a zero-tolerance this year,” Morokane added.
