The Transport Ministry on Monday admitted it could not reduce the road accident death toll on its own. It urged road users to partner with officials to curb the number of fatal accidents. Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele said almost 620 people had already lost their lives since the start of the festive season.

The Transport Department revealed that so far 619 people have died in road accident across the country since the beginning of December. Ndebele said 2650 motorists have been arrested for various traffic offences.

He promised more people will face the full might of the law as no less than one million cars will be stopped and checked at roadblocks nationwide during the festive season.

He called on road users to help officials by obeying the rules of the road.
