Couple killed, boy (3) critically injured in intersection accident

A couple were killed and a three-year-old boy critically injured when the car they were travelling in collided with another in the intersection of Umgeni and Supply Roads in the Springfield Industrial Park this afternoon.

It is thought that the couple, with their ward in the back seat, had been travelling in their red Toyota Tazz on Umgeni Road away from the city and had indicated a turn right into Supply Road. It is alleged that the driver of the Toyota turned into the path of a BMW which was travelling towards the city centre.

The BMW ploughed into the Toyota and sent the crumpled masses of both cars hurtling up the pavement, coming to rest at the roadside. The man and woman, seated in the front of the Toyota were killed. The three-year-old boy sustained life threatening injuries and was carefully extricated by Netcare911 Advanced Life Support Paramedics. He was treated and stabilised at the scene before being rushed by ambulance to the Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital for emergency care.

The driver of the BMW was uninjured and was arrested at the scene. The reason for which is unknown.

Netcare911 Paramedics and eThekwini Metro firefighters used the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic rescue equipment to cut the bodies free. Traffic on the main arterial road was obstructed while emergency service personnel cleared the scene.
