Durban North couple and child killed in Zululand accident

A Durban North couple and one of their two sons were killed in a head-on collision on the R66 near Melmoth, Zululand, yesterday afternoon. Another boy was also critically injured and is fighting for his life at the Netcare Bay Hospital.

It is thought that the two vehicles involved had ploughed into one another while negotiating a sharp bend. They came to rest in the middle of the roadway wedged against one another.

Initially the couple and their children were critically injured at the scene. They were rushed by both Netcare911 and EMRS Paramedics to Ingwelezane Hospital for further care. The woman died enroute and her husband shortly after arrival at the government facility.

Both their sons, aged seven and five-years-old, were also transported by ambulance to Ingwelezane before being transferred out to The Bay Hospital for further care. It is believed that the seven-year-old boy died this morning.

The driver of the other vehicle sustained serious injuries and managed to clamber from the wreck before it caught fire. He was also transported by ambulance to hospital.
