Durban ( Shongweni ) N3 North Bound Just Past Shongweni Bridge

Two people are in a critical condition, four are in a serious condition and another five people have sustained minor to moderate injuries after a collision involving two light motor vehicles occurred on the N3 heading towards Pietermaritzburg just past the Shongweni bridge late last night.

ER24 arrived on the scene to find a Jetta sheared in half and a BMW was off the road just a few meters away. One person was found lying between the two parts of the car and was in a critical condition. A little boy was found on the back seat of the BMW and had suffered a head injury. Both these patients required Advanced Life Support Intervention to be done. They were intubated and placed on a manual ventilator before been transported to hospital.

The driver of the BMW was entrapped and needed the Jaws of Life to be extricated from the vehicle. The driver and three other people were treated for possible neck, back and multiple lacerations. Five people were treated for minor injuries of which three did not want to go to hospital. All the patients were transported to R K Khans Hospital for further medical care.

It is unclear what happened but it is believed that the Jetta was on the N3 heading towards Durban when the driver lost control and went through the centre medium and crashed into the BMW that was heading towards Pietermaritzburg. The impact was so great that it caused the Jetta to shear in half.

All necessary authorities were on the scene and a investigation would be done into the accident.
