Eighteen Injured After Head On Collision

Nine people are in a serious condition while another nine have sustained minor to moderate injuries after a head on collision this afternoon on the N3 Pietermaritzburg bound just after the Hammersdale on ramp.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find two bakkie’s in the north bound of the freeway about 10m away from each other. Four patients were found on the north bound of the freeway, while the remaining fourteen were found on the south bound.

The driver of the Ford Bakkie was mechanically entrapped was extricated by the Fire Department using the Jaws Of Life. Nine patients including the driver of both vehicles were treated for serious injuries. They had suffered multiple lacerations and possible neck and back injuries. The remaining patients had suffered minor abrasions and laceration. All the patients were treated on the scene by ER24 and EMRS and were transported to Life Entabeni Hospital, Pietermaritzburg Medi-Clinic and RK Khans Hospital for further medical treatment.

It is believed that the Isuzu bakkie was traveling towards Durban when the driver lost control and collided with the Armco barrier before crossing over onto the north bound. All patients were ejected from the bakkie.

Traffic was severely affected due to this accident but the necessary authorities were on scene to assist in the traffic problem
