Seven people were killed after their vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier and caught fire on the N1 freeway, near Joostenbergvlakte, in the Western Cape, ER24 said on Sunday.

Spokesperson Tristan Wadeley said paramedics arrived on the scene of the Sunday evening accident and found the burning vehicle on its roof.

One of its occupants was thrown out of the vehicle and found on nearby railway tracks below the freeway.

A second person could be seen inside the vehicle.

But after emergency workers managed to gain entry into the overturned vehicle, five more people, including a child, were also found dead.

It is not known how the accident happened. – Sapa
