Deputy health minister Molefi Sefularo has died in a car accident on the N4 west of Pretoria, the ANC said.

ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu “He was a very good man, a good leader, a good minister and a good deployee of the ANC. We have lost a caring person who lived and dreamt of how to make health care accessible to all.”

President Jacob Zuma said the death of deputy health minister Molefi Sefularo was “a monumental loss for the nation and the progressive movement as a whole”.

Zuma said Sefularo provided sound leadership to the department by assisting Minister Aaron Motsoaledi to steer a very busy department which was pivotal to government’s strategy of changing how government works.

“He was one of the sharpest medical minds in our country. We were still awaiting sterling work from him in the roll-out of the new HIV and AIDS treatment and prevention plan that was announced in December last year. Working together, the Minister and Deputy Minister made a formidable team that ensured excellent performance by the Department,” Zuma said.

Sefularo was appointed deputy minister of health in May 2009 under President Jacob Zuma’s new administration.

He was appointed MEC for health in the North West in 1994.

Sefularo was born in Potchefstroom in the North West in 1957.
