Fifteen people including the driver have been injured after the taxi they were traveling in over turned on the R56 just 8km outside Richmond this afternoon.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene to find what was left of the taxi in the middle of the road. Patients were found lying across the busy R56. The driver was in a critical condition and needed advanced life support intervention. Four other patients had sustained serious injuries and ten others had sustained minor to moderate injuries. They were all treated on the scene and transported to Northdale and Edendale Hospital for further medical care.

It is unclear which direction the taxi was travelling in but the accident caused the commuters to be ejected from the taxi. Emergency personnel said it looked like the taxi had been ripped open with a giant can opener as the taxi was always lying in two pieces.

The necessary authorities were on the scene and would be investigating the incident.
