KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Willies Mchunu, called on outraged Umlazi residents to keep calm after two teenagers were killed when a police officer lost control of his car.

In a statement, Mchunu said that the law was taking its course and pleaded with the community to allow police to investigate the incident without interference.

“No one is immune from the law; hence if the officer in question was found to have had a hand in the death of these people, and out of negligence, then he would face the full might of the law, just like any civilian in a similar position.”

Last weekend two teenagers were killed when a police officer lost control around a bend, slamming into a group of people standing on the pavement.

One teenager died instantly while the other died later in hospital.

Five other people were injured in the incident.

Mchunu said the matter was being investigated by police and sent his condolences to the families of the victims.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time of grieving,” he said.
