The government is considering making third party insurance for motorists compulsory, reports say.

Transport Minister S’bu Ndebele said this in reply to a question in Parliament on Thursday.

Between 65 and 70 percent of the estimated 9.4 million vehicles on SA roads do not have third party insurance, reported Beeld newspaper.

Ndebele said his department would first have to draw up a strategy which would take into account the financial status of vehicle owners and the existing fuel levy.

Chief director of road transport regulation, John Motsatsing, said the project was still in its “brainstorming” stage, reported Business Day newspaper.
