Gauteng police say the driver arrested after the accident which killed former president Nelson Mandela’s great grandchild will face a charge of drunken driving and culpable homicide. Zenani Mandela died early on Friday morning, two days after her thirteenth birthday, while being driven home from the World Cup kickoff concert.

She and her mother were in a car which rolled near the Selby offramp on the M1. Police said that contrary to earlier reports, Mandela’s former wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela was not in the vehicle.

It was not immediately clear if Zenani’s mother was also injured.

Zenani was the eldest child of Zoleka Seakamela and one of Mandela’s nine great grandchildren.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation says: “The family has asked for privacy as they mourn this tragedy”.
