Taxi tensions in Western Cape

The South African National Taxi Council on Monday said it fears renewed tensions between rival groups in the South Peninsula could spread.

Three taxi drivers who were involved in a stand off with illegal operators appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

They were arrested last week following a flare up of taxi violence over lucrative routes in Capricorn, Vrygrond and Seawinds. The men were released on bail of R3,000 each.

Santaco provincial General Secretary Henry Williams has described the situation as volatile.

Meanwhile, the Retreat Taxi Association is calling on local government authorities to intervene in Vrygrond and Capricorn.

“If they are prepared to do such good security and law enforcement during the world cup, I don’t see why they should not apply that same kind of energy,” said the association’s chairperson, Basil Nagel.
