n3-durban-bound-6-august-2010-3

A truck driver had a narrow escape after crashing his vehicle into the back of an articulated truck on the N3 Durban bound just past the Shongweni on ramp in the early parts of this morning.

ER24 paramedics who were amongst the first responders to the scene and were confronted with a truck carrying gas bottles that were strewed across the freeway with the driver of the truck entrapped. The patients left leg was caught between the steering column and the seat. While paramedics were busy inside the cabin of the truck, Fire Department had to use the Jaws of Life and other hydraulic equipment to free the patient from the wreckage. Once out he was stabilised further and transported to Life Entabeni Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

It is unclear what caused the driver to lose control and slam into the back of the other vehicle but the necessary authorities were on the scene and would be investigating the incident further.
