The man known as PigSpotter on social networking site Twitter on Wednesday defended his practice of tipping motorists off about traffic officers conducting speed traps.
However, he agreed to stop alerting followers about the location of roadblocks out of concern it could be assisting criminals or drunk drivers.
There has been mixed reaction to PigSpotter’s tweets, in which he often refers to officers as “bacon rashers”, “pork chops” or “piggies”.
The Johannesburg metro police are searching for the man, known only as Cliff, saying what he is doing is illegal. But Cliff said he was ensuring that people did not break the law by being forced into situation where officers solicited bribes from them.
He also said he was not trying to insult metro police or be derogatory by using the terms he does on Twitter.
“I have the greatest respect for them; for all the good ones out there. For the guys who are collecting bribes, I have absolute zero respect for them,” said Cliff.
He said he used the terms “pork rashers”, “bacon” and “piggies” for comical purposes.
