A fourty eight year old woman has been killed after being knocked by a truck at the intersection of Klipfontein and Hazel roads in Athlone.

It is believed that the woman, who was carrying her three year old granddaughter at the time, may not have seen the heavy construction truck approaching and crossed the street at the robot. The driver of the truck allegedly tried very hard to bring the vehicle to a stop, but sadly, he was unable to and he collided with the woman and child.

It seems that the woman let go of the child almost immediately, which in turn may have saved the little girl’s life. Her granny was then dragged by the truck for a couple of meters.

When ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene the woman was in a very critical condition, having sustained massive abdominal and chest injuries. They desperately tried to save the woman, but had to declared her deceased almost an hour later.

The driver of the truck sustained no physical injury, but was visibly moved by this tragic incident.

The child was taken to hospital for further assessment. The local SAP were on scene for investigation.
