One person has died and six other are in a serious condition following an accident on the N1 highway near the Monte Vista off ramp. Allegedly a bakkie and a luxury sedan were traveling on the highway in the direction of Cape Town when they made contact with each other. The Bakkie then made contact with a barrier before leaving the road and overturning.
All of the patients were occupants of the bakkie and most of them were ejected off of the load bed when the vehicle overturned. When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene rescue personnel were already hard at work extricating one of the occupants out of the bakkie. One of the passengers was declared dead at the scene and a further six patients were taken to hospital.
Two of the occupants are in a serious condition as they had sustained serious head injuries and needed to be taken to hospital urgently. The other four had sustained a variety of injuries ranging from fractures to lacerations and abrasions.
