United Against Malaria (UAM) bracelet aims to raise $1-million for malaria projects in Africa and contribute $2-million to economy of Khayelitsha Township in Cape Town
The United Against Malaria (UAM) bracelet programme is contributing to raising funds for the fight against malaria in Africa and employment for low-skilled workers in Khayelitsha township in Cape Town, where unemployment stands at over 50 percent.
UAM is a partnership of organisations fighting against malaria – a preventable disease which kills a child every 30 to 45 seconds in Africa.
The UAM bracelet programme aims to ensure a legacy for both Khayelitsha and for the wider continent in helping combat malaria. The programme is supported by South African football legend Mark Fish and singing sensation Yvonne Chaka Chaka.
“This is a simple but highly effective way to raise awareness of malaria across Africa on the one hand and at the same time changing the lives of people in Khayelitsha for the better,” said Mark Fish.
At a sale price of $3 each, one-third of the total revenue goes to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, one-third covers the cost of materials and one-third provides an income for the low-skilled workers in Khayelitsha who make the bracelets. In the month of June alone close to $26 000 was paid to previously unemployed, and mostly long-term unemployed, residents of Khayelitsha.
“I am a big supporter of these bracelets because they deliver not one, but two, concrete results. Ten bracelets buy one malaria net. This provides protection for two children for three years and also creates much needed employment in Khayelitsha,” said Chaka Chaka who has been a tireless ambassador for the UAM campaign.
The UAM partnership aims to sell one million bracelets. This ambitious target will raise $1-million for malaria projects in Africa through to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
