The national transport ministry announced at the weekend that it will begin the rollout of its festive season road safety plan in coming weeks.

According to the Road traffic Management Corporation, more than 13,000 people were killed on South African roads last year.

The majority of the fatalities occurred during the festive season.

The department’s Logan Maistry said a collective effort from society is needed to prevent road deaths.

“Road safety is our absolute responsibility and it can only be to us, that we transform to a good image in terms of low traffic carnage. All of us want to end this carnage, all of us must end this carnage,” he urged.

The department’s campaign coincided with World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on Sunday.

The UN says 1,3 million people are killed in traffic related accidents each year around the world.
